Will My Mattress Fit?
Will My Mattress Fit?
A little measuring before delivery can help prevent surprises. Use this guide to check the route from your delivery entrance to the room where your mattress will go. Mattress construction, packaging, and delivery services vary, so treat these measurements as a planning guide and confirm the details for your specific order.
Measure the full route
- Measure every doorway. Measure the clear opening at the narrowest point, with the door open as far as it normally can be. Note the width and height of exterior doors, interior doors, and any low openings.
- Check halls and turns. Measure the narrowest hallway, then look for corners, half walls, railings, cabinets, and light fixtures that reduce usable space. A straight-line doorway measurement may not be enough for a turn.
- Measure stairs and landings. Check the stair width, landing size, ceiling height, and clearance around turns. Include the handrail and any trim that cannot be removed.
- Check the bedroom. Measure the space where the mattress will sit and confirm that the bed frame or foundation is ready. Leave a clear path to the final position.
- Write down the tightest point. Compare the smallest clear opening and the most difficult turn with your mattress and packaging dimensions. If you are unsure, send the measurements to our team before delivery.
Standard mattress sizes
These are common mattress surface dimensions in the United States. Actual product dimensions can vary slightly, and thickness varies by model.
| Size | Approximate width | Approximate length |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 in | 75 in |
| Twin XL | 38 in | 80 in |
| Full | 54 in | 75 in |
| Queen | 60 in | 80 in |
| King | 76 in | 80 in |
| California King | 72 in | 84 in |
These measurements describe the mattress, not necessarily the box, protective packaging, foundation, adjustable base, or bed frame. Check the product specifications for the item you ordered.
Safe handling
- Do not force a mattress through a doorway or around a corner. Forcing it can damage the mattress, walls, trim, or the people moving it.
- Do not bend, fold, drag, or stand a mattress on its side unless the manufacturer’s instructions allow it. Some mattresses are designed to be compressed or temporarily positioned differently, while others are not.
- Use at least two capable adults for a mattress that you are moving yourself, and use a professional team for heavy or awkward items. Lift with care and keep hands and fingers clear of pinch points.
- Protect floors and walls, remove obstacles, and secure pets and children away from the route.
- Remove doors or other obstructions only if it is safe and permitted, and reinstall them securely afterward. Never remove structural, safety, or permanently attached equipment just to make a delivery fit.
What to expect with white-glove delivery
If white-glove delivery is included with your order, the service and scope can vary by product, location, and delivery provider. Review the terms attached to your order and confirm what is included before the appointment.
- Before delivery, clear the route and make sure the room and bed setup area are ready.
- At the appointment, the delivery team will assess the available route and handle the item according to the service provider’s procedures. They may need a clear, safe path and reasonable access to the delivery room.
- White-glove service does not guarantee that an item can pass through an inaccessible doorway, tight turn, narrow stairway, or other restricted route. If the route is not safe or the item cannot be maneuvered without damage, the team may be unable to complete placement.
- Services such as setup, packaging removal, old-mattress removal, or assembly are not universal. Confirm the specific services included with your order.
